Kaylie Straka

Kaylie is an experienced higher education attorney with a focus on investigation and consulting services. Since 2015 she has conducted hundreds of impartial, thorough, and trauma-informed investigations and informal resolutions for universities. Her warm and personable demeanor and in-house experience working with administrators, faculty, and students aid her in connecting with her clients and meeting their compliance needs.
Impartial External Investigator
Kaylie has provided investigative and advisory services relating to Title IX, Title VI, Title VII, Section 504/ADA, the Clery Act, fair housing, workplace, and student affairs civil rights compliance matters for nearly a decade. A career attorney investigator, she spent her first years as an attorney investigating and resolving fair housing complaints relating to protected category discrimination as well as disability accessibility. Kaylie then served as an investigator, senior investigator, and intake manager for a large, public university in Michigan where she utilized her skillset to conduct impartial Title IX and EEO investigations, provide training and consulting services to partners across campus, and offer guidance on informal and alternative resolutions. Immediately prior to joining Aleta Law, Kaylie served as a Deputy Title IX Coordinator for a regional public university where she further honed her skills investigating sensitive, complex matters relating to harassment and discrimination. A skilled analytical writer, she has provided thorough investigative reports and determinations under both single investigator and hearing dependent models. Kaylie has extensive experience assuming investigative duties mid-process and is comfortable and capable investigating matters in settings including medical centers, on campus housing, study abroad programs, summer programs for minors, and situations involving third party vendors on campus.
Consulting and Interim Services
Kaylie’s skills include providing guidance to colleges and universities on a range of Title IX and civil rights-related topics for regulatory compliance and policy development related to federal and state civil rights law. Kaylie has conducted stakeholder training, led mediation and restorative justice resolutions, served as a hearing advisor, and facilitated other grievance resolutions. Her experience includes developing processes and procedures for accommodating pregnant and parenting students, staff, and faculty under Title IX and the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act. Kaylie enjoys working on Title IX matters relating to clinical and laboratory settings, working with international students and scholars, and serving institutions experiencing transitions in leadership and civil rights office structure.
